In the mean time I contacted HP for a price for replacement part, and as I was browsing the internet I found this forum. The 7410 will print (but not copy or fax) with the color cartridge removed. I believe, I will have to remove the top cover, the scanner part and the cover to access the PCB, whifh is probably attached to the ribbon wire. Finally got a real person, who said no problem, they know all about it. The tech support person indicated the problem had to be with the contacts gone bad. Our findings have been HP Printers are very biased against refilled \ recycled cartridges.

I ran the hp diagnostic on the printer and it said I had a pen problem., whatever that is.

It will not recognise an old or new cartridge is non-original HP cartridge. Obviously I am against trashing the whole printer because of this one part. Problem is finding the right person. And I just noticed with a flashlight that there is a small puddle of ink below the ink cartridge.

During my inspection of the printer's contacts with a flashlight, I looking in the void below the cartridge parking position, and discovered a pile of black sludge a half an inch I am able to purchase a 2 year extended warranty for about $50.
